Formatting font in an individual list type control item

I need to list a set of words, multi-selectable by the user, but change font color & background of individual items via code (I want to provide feedback to the user as to whether certain items are valid or duplicates, etc)
Listbox is certainly multi-select, but does not allow (as far as I can tell) changing font characteristics for individual items.
What would be a way to accomplish this?
