Generate Specific Printer Binary Data!

i am not sure if my title is perfect/good to understand.. but still here is the scenario..

there is a 3rd party software that save the selected printer on Printer setup dialog into registry..

but not in a very common way like the printer name, instead they save some hex/bin data to registry.

and for one of my project, i need to change that selected printer programmatically for my application.

so, i think i need to update/modify those registry value..

but as said, as those registry value is not clear (human readable), i can't find to way to form the same data

so, i have tried to contact them and this is what they said:

It's a binary dump of the standard Windows DevMode and DevNames      structures. The details of the settings will depend on the printer      and printer driver.

and when i ask for the snipet of the code to generate those values, it's what they said:

I don't have this information because it is a generated by the      printer driver.

so? can anybody please tell me what that data is? and how to generate same data for another printer? so that, if i update the registry value that software printer setup dialog should show the new printer there?

I don't know the answer to your question but I may be able to find out with some research. You should do some research yourself to start with though, starting with those two structures. You probably won't get all the way but you can certainly find out what those structures are and what information they contain. They are Win32 structures, so you may find information relating specifically to C++ development. Some of that will still be relevant though, as what you're likely to have to do is to invoke one or more Windows API functions to get those structures for your printer, then convert that to binary data. We can cross the conversion bridge later and worry about getting the data first.

BTW, what is the data type of that Registry value? I'm guess REG_BINARY.

The response given to you by the vendor is accurate, those structures are just dumps of the Win32 API structures. Further more they are not lying about the way the data is stored in the registry is not something they have readily because the storage is done within the Win32 Printing APIs. You will need to bone up on WIn32 API Printing to manipulate the values. I recommend not modifying the registry directly. (I used to work on the Windows printing group many years ago so those registry dumps look vaguely familiar.)

Also Petzold's Windows Programming, 5th Edition has a ton about printing. The later editions start using C# and the built in .NET Framework printing abstractions so you won't learn anything about DEVMODE and DEVNAMES. So seek out a copy of the 5th edition. I will leave it up to your own ethical choices whether you will get a pirated PDF version of the book, or actually obtain an official paper or eBook version.
